The ban on night travel by the Zambian government on public service vehicles has been lifted. The decision was made to help in the positive growth of Zambia’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which can be achieved through making the country a twenty-four hours economy. Finance Minister, Felix Mutati, said that the government had put in place strong measures to ensure safety on the Zambian roads.
The public vehicles will now be allowed to operate past 11:00 pm as from 6th December 2017. Mr. Mutati said this while on his tour to inspect the construction of the permanent rail and road bridge between Zambia and Botswana in Kazungula. Initially, the ban was put in place because there was no safety on the Zambian roads. The minister for transport had put in the right measures to ensure that there was improved security on the Zambian roads.
The ban will improve the growth of some critical sectors of the economy like mining and agriculture that will lead to an increase in job opportunities. Mutati, later on, showed his satisfaction with the ongoing work on the Kazungula Bridge project and said that the project would increase the trade and economic ties between Zambia and Botswana.
